The Truth Behind Sleep Apnoea and Women

When you picture someone snoring loudly in front of the TV, who comes to mind? If you said “dad,” you’re not alone. But here’s the thing: snoring isn’t just a “dad thing.”

In fact, a growing number of women – including mums of all ages – are living with snoring and even more serious conditions like sleep apnoea. They just might not be talking about it (or snoring quite as loudly!).

Let’s break down the truth about women, snoring, and what can be done about it.

Why Do Women Snore?

Snoring in women is more common than you think. A few key reasons include:

1. Hormonal Changes

Hormones play a major role in sleep. Pregnancy, menopause, and even monthly cycles can affect how the airway behaves during sleep, increasing the chances of obstruction and snoring.

2. Anatomy

Women tend to have smaller airways than men, which can make them more vulnerable to partial blockages that cause snoring—especially when lying on their back or after a long day.

3. Lifestyle Factors

Stress, weight gain, alcohol use, or a sedentary lifestyle can all contribute to snoring. Combine that with the mental load many women carry, and poor sleep quality becomes even more likely.

The Risks of Ignoring Snoring in Women

It’s easy to brush off snoring as “just a bit of noise,” but it could be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) – a serious health condition.

Here’s why it matters:

  • Daytime fatigue & brain fog – Even after a full night’s sleep, women with untreated sleep apnoea may feel exhausted.
  • Heart health risks – OSA may increase the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.
  • Mood and mental health – Poor sleep can contribute to anxiety, irritability, and even depression.
  • Strained relationships – Sharing a bed with someone who snores loudly can disturb your partner’s sleep too.

Solutions That Actually Work (Without the CPAP!)

We get it that CPAP machines aren’t for everyone. While they’re often effective, many people find them bulky, uncomfortable, and hard to maintain. That’s where QLD Dental Sleep Therapy comes in.

We offer:

  • Custom-fit dental sleep appliances
  • Non-invasive treatments
  • Comfortable, travel-friendly solutions

These oral appliances work by gently repositioning the jaw to keep the airway open all night without the need for noisy machines or masks.

Fun Fact

Did you know that up to 24% of women snore and most of them don’t even realize it? Women tend to snore more quietly than men, which often means their sleep issues go unnoticed and untreated.
