What is a Dental Snoring Device?
A dental snoring device is a custom-fit oral appliance designed to reduce snoring and manage obstructive sleep apnoea by repositioning the jaw to keep the airway open.
A mandibular advancement splint (MAS) is a custom-fitted dental snoring device designed to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apneoa.
It works by repositioning the lower jaw (mandible) slightly forward, which helps to keep the airway open during sleep. This forward positioning prevents the tongue and soft tissues in the throat from collapsing and obstructing the airway, thereby reducing snoring and improving breathing.
MAS devices are typically made from durable, biocompatible materials and are designed to be comfortable for long-term use. They are an effective, non-invasive alternative to CPAP therapy for many individuals, offering benefits such as ease of use, portability, and minimal maintenance.
Improved Sleep Quality:
Dental snoring devices help in maintaining an open airway during sleep, significantly reducing interruptions caused by snoring or sleep apnoea. This leads to a more restful and rejuvenating sleep for both the user and their partner.
Reduced Snoring:
These devices are specifically designed to minimise snoring by repositioning the lower jaw, tongue, and soft tissues, thereby preventing airway blockage. The result is quieter nights and less disturbance.
Ease of Use:
Unlike CPAP machines that can be complicated to set up and operate, dental snoring devices are straightforward. Simply place the custom-fitted device in your mouth before bed, and you’re set for the night.
Comfort:
Dental snoring devices are custom-fitted to the user’s mouth, ensuring a snug and comfortable fit. This personalised design makes them less intrusive and more comfortable compared to the bulky CPAP masks.
Portability:
Ideal for frequent travellers, dental snoring devices are compact and easy to carry. They don’t require an electrical outlet, making them a convenient option for use on the go.
Minimal Maintenance:
Maintaining a dental snoring device is as simple as regular brushing, unlike CPAP machines that require extensive cleaning of the mask, tubing, and humidifier components. This saves time and effort in the long run.
Custom-Fitted:
Made to fit the unique contours of your mouth, these devices provide a tailored solution that enhances comfort and effectiveness. The custom fit ensures optimal performance in reducing snoring and managing sleep apnoea symptoms.
Effective for Obstructive Sleep Apneoa:
Dental snoring devices or Mandibular Advancement Splints are found to be equally as effective in managing mild to moderate sleep apnoea. They offer an effective, less invasive alternative to CPAP therapy, making it easier for users to adhere to their treatment plan. They are also recommended for severe sleep apnoea when unable to tolerate CPAP therapy and provide a lot of benefits to reducing the sleep apnoea compared to not having treatment at all.
Non-Intrusive:
As they do not involve any external apparatus like masks or tubes, dental snoring devices allow for more natural movement during sleep, contributing to an overall more comfortable experience.
By addressing these key benefits, dental snoring devices present a compelling alternative for those seeking to improve their sleep quality and reduce snoring with minimal hassle.
When it comes to choosing a dental snoring device, you have two primary options: custom-fitted devices and over-the-counter (OTC) devices. Each comes with its own set of advantages and limitations. Here’s a detailed comparison to help you decide which option is best for you:
Fit:
Custom-Fitted Devices:
These devices are tailored specifically to the contours of your mouth. A dental professional takes 3D scans of your teeth to create a digital impression, ensuring a precise and snug fit. This customisation minimises discomfort and enhances the device’s effectiveness.
OTC Devices:
Over-the-counter devices are designed to be one-size-fits-all. While some may offer boil-and-bite customisation, it’s a far cry from the precision of a custom-fitted device. The fit may be less secure and less comfortable, which can impact the device’s overall efficacy.
Comfort:
Custom-Fitted Devices:
Since these devices are made from 3D scans of your teeth, they offer unparalleled comfort. The snug fit reduces the likelihood of irritation or pressure points, making it easier to wear the device throughout the night.
OTC Devices:
With a one-size-fits-all design, OTC devices can be less comfortable. They may cause irritation or discomfort, especially if the fit is not ideal. This can lead to a lower compliance rate, as users might find it difficult to wear the device consistently.
Effectiveness:
Custom-Fitted Devices:
Due to their precise fit and tailored design, custom-fitted devices are generally more effective at reducing snoring and managing mild to moderate sleep apnea. The custom fit ensures optimal jaw positioning, which is crucial for keeping the airway open.
OTC Devices:
While OTC devices can still be effective, their one-size-fits-all nature means they might not position the jaw as accurately. This can result in less consistent results and may not be sufficient for more severe cases of sleep apnoea.
Durability:
Custom-Fitted Devices:
Made from high-quality, durable materials, custom-fitted devices are built to last. They can withstand nightly use and require fewer replacements over time, making them a long-term investment in your health.
OTC Devices:
Typically made from less durable materials, OTC devices may wear out more quickly. They often need to be replaced more frequently, which can add to the overall cost over time.
Cost:
Custom-Fitted Devices:
These devices come with a higher upfront cost due to the customisation process and professional dental fittings. However, their durability and effectiveness can make them more cost-effective in the long run.
OTC Devices:
Over-the-counter devices are generally more affordable initially. However, the need for frequent replacements and potential lower effectiveness may make them more expensive over time.
While custom-fitted dental snoring devices offer superior comfort, fit, and effectiveness, they come at a higher initial cost. OTC devices provide a more affordable and accessible option but may fall short in terms of comfort and long-term effectiveness.
Your choice will ultimately depend on your specific needs, budget, and the severity of your snoring or sleep apnoea.
Wake up feeling refreshed with a comfortable, snore-free sleep.

When considering solutions for snoring and sleep apnoea, dental snoring devices offer several advantages over CPAP machines, particularly in terms of comfort, ease of use, portability, and maintenance.
Comfort: Dental snoring devices are custom-fitted to the user’s mouth, making them more comfortable for many individuals compared to the often bulky and intrusive CPAP masks. The tailored fit ensures a snug and less obtrusive experience during sleep.
Ease of Use: CPAP machines require the user to wear a mask connected to a machine that blows air constantly, which can be complicated and cumbersome to set up and adjust. In contrast, dental devices are straightforward to use; simply place the device in your mouth before bedtime, and you are good to go.
Portability: For those who travel frequently, dental snoring devices are highly portable. They are compact and easy to pack, unlike CPAP machines that are larger, require an electrical outlet, and add extra weight to luggage.
Maintenance: Dental devices require minimal maintenance compared to CPAP machines. Cleaning a dental device is as simple as brushing it, whereas CPAP machines involve regular cleaning of the mask, tubing, and humidifier components, which can be time-consuming.
Additionally, dental snoring devices are particularly effective for individuals with mild to moderate sleep apnoea, offering a convenient and less disruptive alternative to CPAP therapy. Their ease of use and comfort make them a preferred choice for many looking to manage their snoring and sleep apnoea symptoms effectively. For people with severe sleep apnoea who can’t tolerate CPAP therapy then a MAS device is recommended as an alternative to at least reduce their condition’s severity which often leads to many symptomatic benefits.
Most users adapt to wearing the device within a few nights. The custom fit ensures maximum comfort and minimal disruption.

Regular use of our devices not only reduces snoring but also improves overall sleep quality and health.
The first consultation appointment includes a comprehensive discussion around snoring and sleep apnoea concerns and a thorough assessment and examination of the dental and jaw structures. This is followed by in-depth education on the findings, provision of any referrals that may be useful (such as radiographs or other medical specialist assessments), and the creation of a treatment plan. If going ahead with a mandibular advancement splint (MAS), then 3D imaging scans are taken of the teeth to take an impression of the teeth with additional records and analysis to send to the lab for construction.
The second step is the patient then returns after the device returns from construction and a second ‘Fitting’ appointment is had to check the fit of the device, go through the instructions on how to use and clean it, and provide a schedule for how they will adjust it over the next few weeks.
The third step is review of their progress via an initial email review form which is typically at the 3 week mark whereby follow-up appointments either in clinic or via telehealth can be scheduled if needed to assist the patient with anything they require. We recommend ongoing 6-12 monthly reviews in clinic after this to ensure the device is still working effectively and to ensure they are not having any issues.
